Europe’s economic and technological sovereignty is more than ever a key concern for investors. With this in mind, BNP Paribas Asset Management (BNPP AM) has just launched the Europe Strategic Autonomy listed equity fund, which is entirely dedicated to “European strategic autonomy.” This new vehicle aims to support key companies that strengthen the continent’s ability to make its industries independent of third countries, both industrially and in terms of security.
The fund’s objective is clear: to invest in listed European companies that play a key role in Europe’s ability to ensure its independence in sectors deemed strategic. The focus is on defense, cybersecurity, cutting-edge technologies, critical infrastructure, energy, and essential supply chains.
This initiative comes amid a tense geopolitical climate and a clear commitment by European institutions to build a more resilient economy. The pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and tensions with China have highlighted Europe’s vulnerabilities in the face of external dependencies.
The fund will select primarily European companies active in sectors supported by European public policies and investment plans (Green Deal, recovery plan, joint defense projects).
It relies on an analysis combining financial performance and non-financial criteria (ESG), with an emphasis on innovative, strategic companies aligned with resilience and transition objectives.
BNPP AM is not alone in this niche. Amundi, through CPR AM, launched a similar fund in 2023. These initiatives respond to a growing demand for investments with strategic impact, combining financial returns with a contribution to building a more self-sufficient Europe.
This fund is aimed at both institutional investors and savvy individual investors seeking to diversify their portfolios while participating in a meaningful initiative. It is particularly suited to those with a medium- to long-term investment horizon who wish to invest in companies poised to play a central role in the continent’s future.
